Let’s talk about Baby Soap!

Mums and especially new mums want to give their babies the best care possible. Whilst pregnant we are careful in our dietary choices to give our babies the best start in life and this carries on when our babies are born.

My inspiration for this exciting new range of soaps has been my twin boys and my job as a midwife. As a mother I wanted only the best for my baby’s skin I wanted to make a recipe that was free from harsh chemicals, synthetic fragrances and artificial preservatives. This is where my journey began researching how to make a baby soap that contains all natural skin care ingredients that not only soothes but softens baby’s skin.

A baby’s skin is so pure and soft and we as mums and dads want to keep it this way by using only products that will be gentle and kind to them. Bath time for me was a precious opportunity for bonding with my newborns. This time was irreplaceable, it made me feel so special as a mother caring for my children’s delicate skin, with natural products that both cleansed and nourished.

Babies skin requires extra care and a good bar of hand-made soap is ideal. This is where my journey began researching how to make a baby soap that contains all natural skin care ingredients that not only soothes but softens baby’s skin.

In cold process soap making, I began to learn that certain oils and butters have many different properties and are chosen on their gentle cleansing, moisturising, hardening and lathering abilities. For my gentle baby soap recipe, I chose to use olive oil in the highest quantity. When used in soap making olive oil adds many important qualities, it is incredibly moisturising and helps to ensure that your babies skin feels soft and conditioned after use. It also adds firmness to our soap bars adding longevity to its use. It is also an incredibly mild ingredient and can be used by the whole family including those with sensitive skin.

Coconut oil creates a protective moisturising shield on skin, it is full of antioxidants and is composed of healthy saturated fats and vitamins such as vitamin E, amino acids lauric acid and caprylic acid. It also adds a fantastic lather and lots of bubbles.

Cocoa Butter helps to give firmness to the soap bar. It is also high in fatty acids and hydrates the skin deeply making it a wonderful addition. It is absorbed well without making the skin greasy. Shea butter is a natural product made from the African shea nut tree. It was chosen in our soaps as we believe the skin conditioning properties that it adds are fantastic. It can help keep the skin hydrated and supple when used regularly. It contains several important nutrients including vitamins A and E and essential fatty acids.

Castor oil in small amounts adds a rich creamy lather. It is a humectant which means that it attracts moisture to the skin.

Sweet almond oil is a light oil that absorbs well when used in soap making. It helps to create a rich lather and is a very soothing oil. It is reported to be good for skin conditions such as rashes psoriasis and eczema.

Goats milk has been used for centuries for its moisturising and healing properties, and our goats milk baby soaps are a perfect way to incorporate this powerful ingredient into your routine. Due to the high fat content in milk, goats milk soap can help eliminate itching and irritation.

Oats were added as a good way to soothe baby’s delicate skin. Oatmeal has been found to normalise the skins pH balance. It can help repair the skin barrier, keep moisture in and prevent the skin from drying out too quickly. It may also help to treat baby skin rashes like eczema and nappy rash.

Honey is an amazing product. It has antimicrobial, anti inflammatory and antibacterial properties and also speeds up your skin cells healing process. It is also an emollient so it helps keep moisture in skin. Essential oils are used in our baby soaps which are suitable for use at three months old. They are natural ingredients and the essential oils we use are all 100% pure and distilled through the steam distillation method. They give a subtle yet beautiful scent to our range.
